Orthodontic Emergency Care Information You Should Know
While undergoing orthodontic treatment, it’s not uncommon to experience minor issues or injuries related to your braces or other orthodontic appliances. These emergencies typically fall into two categories: problems with orthodontic appliances and direct injuries to your mouth or teeth. Here’s what to do if you face an emergency during your treatment.
Issues with Orthodontic Appliances
Sometimes, orthodontic appliances like braces may become loose, bent, or damaged during treatment. If you experience any of the following, don’t panic. Here’s what you can do until we can see you in the office:
Loose Bands or Brackets: If a band or bracket comes loose, leave it in place. Contact us during office hours, and we’ll schedule an appointment to reattach the appliance if necessary.
Irritating Tie Wire: If a tie wire is causing discomfort or irritation, you can cover it with beeswax. Alternatively, gently push it back into place using a blunt object like a pencil eraser or Q-tip.
Broken or Poking Archwire: If the archwire is broken or poking, you may be able to bend it with a pencil eraser or trim it carefully with nail clippers. If the issue persists or you’re unable to resolve it, contact us during office hours.
For all orthodontic appliance emergencies, please call us during patient hours. We do not handle emergencies on a walk-in basis to ensure we can accommodate all scheduled patients.
Direct Injuries to Your Mouth or Teeth
If you suffer a direct injury to your mouth or teeth, whether or not you’re currently undergoing orthodontic treatment, follow these steps:
Apply Ice: Immediately ice the injured area to reduce swelling.
Contact Your Family Dentist: For any displaced, fractured, or knocked-out teeth, reach out to your family dentist right away. An X-ray will likely be needed to assess the extent of the damage.
While we can assist with any displaced or damaged orthodontic appliances after you’ve seen your general dentist, it’s essential to address any immediate concerns with your family dentist first, as they may have the necessary materials or anesthesia for proper treatment.

If you experience pain or have an emergency after office hours, please don’t hesitate to contact our office. We provide information on who to contact for immediate assistance during off-hours.
